PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease)

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a disorder of infection and inflammation of female internal genital organs, which are uterus, ovarian tubes, and ovaries.  PID is usually caused by multiple types of bacteria from sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs).

Symptoms & Signs of PID

The patients are often presented with fever, lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge.  Sometimes, the patient might experience painful urination and vaginal bleeding.  Along with a physical examination, the diagnosis is usually made by clinical presentation.  

Treatment

PID can be treated either in out-patient or in-patient department.  If the patient has a high fever with or without chills, we highly recommend that getting an in-patient treatment might be a better option.  At out-patient department, the patient will be prescribed with at least two antibiotics both injection and oral medications.

Patient Education

During the PID treatment the patient should stay abstinence until the treatment is complete.  Later, the patient should get a comprehensive STD screening.  Condom usage is advised.
